Part 4 of Why I love my small house

After ragging on myself and my feelings about my small (672 sq ft) house recently, I want to expand on some of the reasons why I really do love this house. This is the fourth post in a series discussing what I love about our house.

Today: Our bedroom

First. I love our candle holders. There are four of these total. Two on each side of my dressing table and I love them. I don't remember where we go the wall mounts or the glass candle holders but I love the combination of iron and glass.

Second. This framed poem. This is a poem that I wrote several years ago while going through a rough time. Justin and I weren't together yet at that point but I felt compelled to share it with him. I was sure it would resonate with him. It did and he printed it and framed it for me. Inside the back cover is a lovely note that he wrote for me and it was not long afterwards that we began dating.

Third. Our ceiling fan. It nothing special but after living through a summer with the office as my bedroom (read: no ceiling fan) I am extremely grateful for this one. We have it on all year round, day and night, and I love how it keeps the air from becoming stagnant.

Fourth. This bench. It's a little dinged up and could use to be refinished but I love it. It goes with the dressing table but I found that it took up too much of the walk way when put there. So here it lives at the foot of the bed. I think it may stay there forever. My now brother-in-law Joel helped me reupholster it three and a half years ago. I'm afraid he may never get over the horror of it. The piece still had it's original upholstery, complete with (ancient) horse hair filling.

Fifth. My nightstand! Contents: my lotions, the books I'm currently reading, my monster water bottle, the painting my mama bought me, and a little set of throwing knives.

And sixth. Our bed. It is, without a doubt, the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. A double for us normal sized people. Flannel sheets. Three fleece blankets. One quilt. One down comforter. Six pillows stacked against the headboard.

So there you have it! My absolute favourite things in this room! There are many more things in our room that I could have talked about. Three more candle holders. Many, many pictures of the two of us. Justin's Schlock Mercenary card. But these are the highlights :-)

Part 3 of Why I love my small house

After ragging on myself and my feelings about my small (672 sq ft) house recently, I want to expand on some of the reasons why I really do love this house. This is the third post in a series discussing what I love about our house.

Today: The office

This is one of my favourite pieces of art in my house. We bought it on our honeymoon and I just love it. It'll probably go into a nursery someday but until then it looks perfect on the brown wall. I particularly love the little owl hanging upside down. He makes me smile.

The second piece of artwork hanging in our office: this lighthouse print. The Outer Banks are one of my family's favourite vacation spots. This print brings back happy childhood memories.

Our bookshelves are quite my favourite. The left is Justin's and the right is mine. They're not particularly tidy and, well, they're in dire need of being reorganized but I'm in love. They're big and black and so sturdy. I love the top and bottom molding, and the shelves has trim along the end as well. These little details make the set that much more awesome. (P.S. Don't you love our old desktop?)

And my last favourite piece of this room? Our camping wall. We have our sleeping bags hung from the ceiling to prevent them from crumpling and we had no shelf space for our bags so up they got hung as well. Our tents are tucked into the corner there and it's all very tidy.

So there you are. My favourite parts of the office!

Part 2 of Why I love my small house

After ragging on myself and my feelings about my small (672 sq ft) house recently, I want to expand on some of the reasons why I really do love this house. This is the second post in a series discussing what I love about my bathroom. Part 1 can be found here.

Once again, I have to start with the obvious: it's small. It's fast and relatively easy to clean. Or as easy to clean as a bathroom can be.

Secondly. It has a medicine cabinet. I love this so much. I love knowing that my toothpaste is tucked inside where nothing can get on it. I love not having to look at it all the time. It's a win-win situation.

Thirdly. I love this frame and these post cards. I bought on vacation several years ago and was lucky enough to find this frame that fits them perfectly! Everytime I look at them I'm reminded of my favourite beach. It's my happy place :-)

But my absolute favourite thing about this bathroom? It would have to be this set of shelves. Sure it's kind of messy and our toiletries are out for everyone to see, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. It holds so much and I don't have to find somewhere else in our house to store these items.

There you go! Now you know what makes me happy when I'm using the toilet. Tomorrow I'll look at the office!
